  • Goodbye to two fine ladies by robinv, 2009-11-20 13:03:55
I always loved Jo as a character, and for those who felt she was immature and not hunter material, I think this episode proves she was both. She willingly sacrificed herself for the good of the many, knowing she wasn't going to make it. It broke my heart to watch Sam holding her hand in his, saying his goodbyes. I always felt he might be the better brother for her, had things gone differently. When Dean kissed her, I wondered if she was regretting turning down his advances the night before. He was so sweet and tender, so sad, it just killed me. Worst of all, of course, was Ellen's decision to die with her child. I have an only son, and I really identified with Ellen's choice. If, God forbid, my son were dying, I would choose to die by his side, as Ellen did. I love my son so much, I'm not sure I'd want to go on without him. Both Samantha and Alona played their scenes so brilliantly, I couldn't help crying. I felt badly for both women, and for Sam and Bobby and Dean for having to say farewell to yet more good friends in the course of this terrible war. So well done--and using Kim Manners' expression, "Kick it in the *" made it all the more poignant! Love, Robi

She has been written much better this year, before that yes she was written too young, immature and was originally intended as a love interest for Dean. It didn't work, the writing for her sucked (like so many other female characters on SPN). If they had written her this way throughout the show, I think more people, including myself, would have liked her just fine, as I loved Ellen. Oh and she's not Sam's type at all: he likes them highly intelligent, professional and a bit 'dangerous' and also more mature.

Ellen will be sorely missed. I really liked her. Never much cared for Jo and I really haven't cared much for Alona although she was good at this past weekend's con in Chicago.

Ellen and Jo's deaths affected me more than any other deaths period. They were the only female hunters, now there are none. I always wished the relationship with Dean and Jo had been developed into a romance situation instead of the "little sister" Loved the chemistry between Dean and Jo. She matured into a smart, sexy woman. .Ripped me apart when the hellhounds attacked Jo. Knew she was the first casualty with her stomach ripped apart. Hellhounds heard but not seen was terrifying; the fear terror showed on Dean?s face because in that moment he was reliving when they attacked him. Wished Jo could have had her moment with Dean. Dean's pain was unpalatable. Watching him see Jo dying and realizing just how much he cared about her left me with this big hole in my stomach, numb, empty. Alona and Jensen delivered the best performances seen on SPN ever. Ellen was the only person except for Bobby Dean would listen to. Ellen could always keep Dean in line. Ellen had the most control over Dean because she was the mother figure Dean needed so desperately. Dean had John, and when John died the boys met Ellen. She kept Dean from loosing it after John died Rest in peace Ellen and Jo. The Havelle family gave all they had. I will never forget Ellen and Jo. It was fitting they went out as hunters. They knew they wouldn?t survive this hunt. I wish Jo had said yes to Dean, she always loved him, and being her last night on earth why not have the thing you wanted...Dean. (That was my fantasy request, Jo saying no to Dean was much more effective showing the love they actually shared. Dean's love and respect for Jo broke my heart. He did acknowledge that they were both great hunters. Dean's last two kisses to Jo - sweet, tragic and filled with more p*ion than any love scene could have portrayed. Burning the photo was respect to great hunters. Dean looking at the photo of Jo's face burning, got to me, I was a puddle on the floor. IMHO Dean did love Jo and realized the terrible cost of life to him and Sam for being the hunters John brought them up to be. Dean also watched his last chance at happiness and having someone love him who understood him and his life style so well. I believe this is the first time Dean lost women he loved besides his mother. Sam lost Jessica and Madison. Dean knows how Sam has felt. In conclusion: Worst, gut wrenching have me on the floor a blubbering idiot episode period.

I initially didn't like that Bobby burned the photo but then read how in fact it was his way of giving the women a 'hunter's burial'. Usually a hunter would have their remains burned on a pyre but Ellen and Jo were denied this, so by burning the photo the men could honour these wiomen as they deserved :)

It bothers me that Bobby burned the photo. It seems wrong to get rid of such a beautiful keepsake of the brave women who fought with them to bring Lucifer down, especially since it was all for naught. I hoped that someday, Bobby and Ellen might get together, but that will never happen now. Burning that picture seemed to be denying Jo and Ellen, and I wished Bobby hadn't done it. It was a searing scene, of course, especially the way Dean's eyes lingered on Jo. Did he have regrets? She was a very different woman from the girl he met in ELAC. She helped him and Sam escape the store, and definitely died a hero's death. I sure hope Bill Harvelle is reunited with his wife and daughter now.

I loved this episode so much, even though we lost two characters who meant a lot to me. Ellen was so strong, beautiful and a great role model, I felt. After losing her husband, she had her own business, and after losing that, she hunted with her only child, to keep her as safe as possible, I *ume. Sam and Dean learned the Colt can't kill EVERYTHING. Such is life in its ongoing suckiness. I saw their pain and felt it deeply. They only recently lost Pamela. Women in their lives don't seem to last long, do they? I'm so proud of Sam's adamant refusal to suc*b to Lucifer, even though I know there are cir*stances under which both he and Dean will be forced to accept Lucifer and Michael's vessels. My only hope for their survival is that God finally makes His appearance, because I honestly feel he is the only referee who can stop the squabbling between his unruly kids. Love, Robin

It bothered me too at first, but I think they were paying them a 'hunter's funeral pyre' substitution, so in effect that is even more powerful. Plus Bobby either has film still or it's on the camera hard drive, so I'm sure once they get over the initial sorrow, he can print off some more. Much as I kind of liked the idea of Bobby and Ellen together, I think they are much stronger apart and I'm not someone who feels that everyone needs to 'be' with someone else. I think Dean actually found himself respecting Jo at the end, something I don't believe he did before, so that was good to see. I really will miss Ellen; she was one of a kind and fit so well into the hunter world and I greatly admired her. I'm searching my memory, but I could have sworn that Castiel basically told the guys it was a 'fools errand' to try and kill Lucifer with the colt. They obviously forgot he is not only an angel, but an archangel. Most of the angels seem to believe that an angelic knife is what will kill angels. The knife did nothing to kill Castiel and he's bottom line ranking, so why would the colt kill angels? Also remember Dean saying that no hunter he had ever heard of, had met an angel, so it stands to reason that Samual Colt wouldn't be making a weapon to kill them (and also thinking angels were the 'good guys' too). So Dean and Sam were both just 'hoping' the colt would work, despite the signs saying that it wouldn't. I really really enjoyed Sam and Dean's interaction throughout this whole show. The most telling part to me, being the little comment by Dean about 'Sam not trusting a demon' and Sam just kind of laughing and they carrying on without angst or anger - very nicely played. Also the discussion about whether or not Sam was coming and along and Dean bowing to Sam's better answer on this. Good to see that they are working together and not against each other again.

It bothered me at first too but I think it was an homage to them in a way.

  • Guy on guy at crossroads? by robinv, 2009-11-20 13:15:25
Hee! I always wondered what happened with the kiss when they sent a male demon to a male requester at a crossroads. Now we know! That was quite interesting. Pendleton must have deeply buried homosexual desires, huh? He seemed pretty grossed out.

Well remember that Sam had a male demon turn up when he tried to sell his soul in return for Dean, so it wasn't that much of a surprise. I found it showed more how shallow the humans were that he was more concerned about kissing a male, as opposed to kissing a DEMON!! Priorities man! :) But he was a sleazeball anyway, so I though it was great. I loved Crowly and hope he turns up again. Between him and the actor playing Lucifer, we're getting some very cl* acting for these characters... good to see and it really adds depth to the show.
