(BOBBY'S PANIC ROOM) - Sam stares up at the fan in the ceiling, which has been set inside the pattern of a Devil's Trap. Dean's beringed right hand opens the window in the door. "OK, lemmee out, this is not funny," says Sam, sweating. "Damn straight," agrees Dean, leaning against the wall outside the panic room. "Dean, this is CRAZY," insists Sam. "No, not until you dry out," says Dean. Sam's face looks shrouded in red as he apologizes for lying. "Look, just open the door," he says reasonably. "You don't have to apologize," says Dean, "it's not your fault that you lied to me over and over again--I get it, you couldn't help yourself." "I'm not some junkie!" says Sam. "Right," says Dean, "I guess I've just IMAGINED how strung out you've been." Pushing his hair back, Sam says, "You're actually trying to twist this into some ridiculous drug intervention?!" "If it sounds like a duck. . ." says Dean. "I'm not drinking the demon blood for KICKS," says Sam, "I'm getting strong enough to kill Lilith!" "That's about as far away from strong as you can get--try weak, try desperate, try pathetic," says Dean. "Killing Lilith is what matters," insists Sam, "or are you so busy being self-righteous, you've forgotten that?" "Oh, Lilith's gonna die," vows Dean, "Bobby and I will kill her--but not with you." "You're not serious," says Sam. "You just bought yourself a bench-warmer seat to the apocalypse," says Dean, and closes the window. "Come back here!" orders Sam, "DEAN! LEMMEE OUTTA HERE! DEAN!" As his brother screams and begs, Dean climbs upstairs, his face twisted with misery. Will either of them survive Sam's intervention? read less

It's a pleasure to see you again. It looks like I have you all to myself here." He passes a scalpel under his chin. "Goodness, how WILL we pass the time?" Abuptly, Sam is strapped to a table, gag just under his mouth, in the middle of the Devil's Trap. He's barefoot. "Don't, don't, no, no, no," he begs Alistair, then screams as the torturer begins slicing at him. "Stop, please, Alistair!" pleads Sam. "So polite all of a sudden," notes Alistair, holding up blood-covered hands. "Very nice." He leans in very close to Sam's face. "I appreciate that." He makes another cut and Sam screams in pain, but as the camera circles him, he is suddenly lying alone on the cot in the room, Alistair and his bindings are gone, and his shoes have been returned to his feet. Yet Sam still screams, agonized, as if Alistair is still cutting away at him. Upstairs, downing strong drinks, hearing his brother's screams, Dean asks Bobby, "How long is this going to go on?" "Here, let me look it up in my Demon Detox Manual," says Bobby, "oh, wait, no one ever wrote one. . .no tellin' how long it'll take, hell, or if Sam'll even live through it." The phone rings. Bobby answers. "Suck dirt and die, Rufus, call me again and I'll kill ya," says Bobby, and hangs up. "What's up with Rufus?" asks Dean. "He knows," says Bobby darkly. The phone rings again. Bobby answers: "I'm busy, you sum-bitch, this better be important." He looks at Dean, eyes wide. (PANIC ROOM) - Sam struggles on the cot against imaginary bonds, then seems to realize he's not tied down. He touches his uncut stomach and sits up. "The answer is yes," says a voice, "you're hallucinating." Sam, gasping, sees his 14-year-old self (Colin Ford). "That's right, it's me," the boy says. Or I mean it's. . .you." "I'm losing my mind," decides adult Sam. "Definitely," agrees young Sam. "What do you want?" asks adult-Sam. "An explanation!" demands young-Sam, "how could you do this to me? I thought we were going to be normal." "I tried, I did," answers adult-Sam, "it didn't pan out that way--sorry, kid." "'Sorry kid,' that's what you have to say?" asks young-Sam, "it's all we ever wanted, and we were so close--you got away from Dad, you quit on Dean, you were going to become a lawyer and get married! Why did you blow it?" "Look," says adult Sam, clearly guilty, "they killed Jessica." "Yeah," says young-Sam, "and if you hadn't run off with Dean, if you'd been there to protect her, she'd still be alive." "I know," says adult-Sam with self loathing. "You think Jess would want you to turn into this?" asks the kid, "she loved you!--you think she'd be happy, you using her as an excuse?" "I'm sorry," says adult-Sam, "I am, but life doesn't turn out the way you thought it would when you're 14 years old--we were never going to be normal; we were never going to get away--grow up." "Maybe you're right," agrees young-Sam, "maybe there's no escape. After all, how can you run from what's inside you?" To adult-Sam's horror, young-Sam's eyes turn demon yellow! read less

Bobby looked it up--these are all seals, breaking fast! "How many are left?" asks Dean. Bobby doesn't know, but surmises there can't be many: "Where are hell are your angel pals?" "You tell me," says Dean gruffly. Bobby wonders--with the apocalypse being nigh and all, is this the right time for them to be having this little domestic drama? "Sam can kill demons," points out Bobby, "he's got a shot at stopping Armageddon." "So what?" asks Dean, "sacrifice Sam's life, Sam's soul, for the greater good?--is that what you're saying?--times are bad, so let's use Sam as a nuclear warhead?" "I know you hate me for suggesting it," says Bobby gently, "I hate me for suggesting it--I love that boy like a son--all I'm saying is, maybe he's here right now, instead of on the battlefield, 'cause we love him too much." (PANIC ROOM) - Sam, seated, legs crossed, on the floor, tips his head back and stares at the light reflecting through the fan above him. Thirsty, he focuses on a pitcher of water on a table. Turning, he is about to struggle to his feet when a woman's voice says, "Poor baby." Rising to his feet, he sees "M-mom!" She's wearing the white nightdress in which she burned and died, and the blood across her abdomen looks black in the panic room's funky light. "Sam, you look just awful," says Mary. Sam looks down at himself, ashamed. "Let's hear it," he says, "go ahead--you're disappointed, you never thought I'd turn out this way, I'm a piss-poor excuse for a son. Your heart is broken. Am I close?" He sits on the cot. "Not at all," answers Mary, "you're doing the right thing, Sam. What you're doing is BRAVE! You're not being crazy, you're being practical." He gazes up at her hopefully. "Sam, I am SO proud of you!" "But. . .but. . .Dean," says Sam. "Your brother doesn't understand," says Mary, sitting beside him, "I was raised a hunter, from a long line--we understand that there are going to be hard choices. We do what we have to to get the job done." She caresses his hair. "Yes, our family is cursed, but YOU have the power to turn it into a gift, you can use it against them." "For revenge?" asks Sam. "No, for justice," says Mary, "I know how scared you are." Grimacing, Sam says, "What's in me, Mom, it's. . ." "Evil," finishes Mary, "and you know it." "What if it's stronger than me?" asks Sam, ashamed, "look at me--what if Dean's right?" "Dean can never know how strong you are," says Mary, caressing his face, "because Dean is weak--look at what he's done to you--locking you in here? He's terrified! He's in over his head, you have to go on without him. You have what it takes--you have to kill Lilith." "Even if it kills me?" asks Sam. Mary looks at him, the answer in her eyes. "Make my death mean something," she says, "I'm counting on you, Sam--don't let anyone or anything get in your way--not even Dean." She takes his head between her hands, kisses his cheek, hugs and holds him close. Sam, who doesn't remember the feel of a mother's touch at all, leans into her when she releases him, a rapturous expression on his face. Abruptly, he is alone, lost, looking around for her. read less

"You got ass-reamed in heaven," says Dean in disbelief, "but 'it was not of import, Dean'?" "I can't," says Cas desperately, "I'm sorry." He walks away from Dean and adds, "Get to the reason you really called me--it's about Sam, right?" "Can he really do it?" asks Dean. "Kill Lilith? Stop the apocalypse?" "Possibly, yes," says Cas, "but as you know, he'd have to take certain steps." "Crank up the hell blood regimen," guesses Dean. "Consuming the amount of blood it would take to kill Lilith would change your brother forever," says Cas, "most likely he would become the next creature that you would feel compelled to kill. There's no reason this would have to come to pass. We believe it's you, Dean, not your brother. The only question for us is whether you're willing to accept it. Stand up and accept your role--YOU are the one that will stop it." They stare at each other for a few moments before Dean says, "If I do this, Sammy doesn't have to?" "If it gives you comfort to think that way," replies Cas. (That's a non-answer if ever I've heard one, Cas!) Shaking his head, walking away from the angel, Dean says, "You're a dick these days!" He takes a deep breath and says, "Fine, I'm in." "Will you give yourself wholly over to the service of God and his angels?" asks Cas. "Yeah, exactly," says Dean, nodding tiredly. "Say it," commands Cas. Dean turns to gaze at him suspiciously, and says, "I give myself over wholly to serve God and you guys." Deadly serious, Cas adds, "You swear to follow His will and His word as swiftly and obediently as you did your own father's?" "Yes, I swear," says Dean, staring Cas straight in the eye, "now what?" "You wait," says Cas, "and we call on you when it's time." The camera draws away from them, taking in the darkness surrounding them in the salvage yard. Dean's head is bowed before Castiel. (But, has the angel given him a loophole in the contract by saying he must follow orders as swiftly and obediently as he did John's? Did he always? What an amazing scene, huh?) read less

"Gimmee a little credit," says Dean, "I've never trusted them less. They come on like shady politicians from planet Vulcan--what other option do I have? It's either trust the angels or let Sammy trust a demon?" "I see your point," says Bobby quietly. Hearing what Bobby dubs "a little too much nothin'" coming from the panic room, the two men race downstairs. Sam is on the floor, seemingly convulsing. Dean thinks he might be faking, but when Sam's body is thrown against the panic room wall and pinwheels around, body thrashing uncontrollably, they wrestle him to the floor. Dean pulls Sam's belt out of the loops and shoves it into his mouth, trying to prevent him from biting off his tongue. "We're going to have to tie him down for personal safety," gasps Bobby as they struggle to hold him. Dean, staring down at the wreck of his brother, doesn't respond. "DEAN!" shouts Bobby, trying to catch his attention. "BEFORE HE HAS ANOTHER FIT!" "Yeah, yeah, let's just get it over with," says Dean, agitated, having a hard time dealing with this. (LATER) - Sam awakens to find himself cuffed, hands and feet, to the cot. They wrapped something soft underneath the bindings, to keep him more comfortable. Dean stands at the foot of the cot. "We had to," he explains. "The demon blood was flinging you all over the room. Tell me something, Sam, why did you do this to yourself?" "You know why," says Sam. "Right--kill Lilith," says Dean, "the big excuse--but WHY? What, revenge, right?" "Of course," answers Sam. "Revenge for what?" asks Dean. "For sending me to hell? Do you happen to notice that I'm back? Alive and kickin'! So what's the point?" "The point," says Sam, "how about stop the damn apocalypse?" "MY gig, not yours," says Dean, "the angels said so, remember? God picked me, man. So ya got any other fantastic excuses, hm?" read less

"At least he dies human!" cries Dean. (PANIC ROOM) - "I know why you really drink that blood, Sam," says Imaginary Dean, walking around the cot in a circle. "Just leave me alone," says Sam. "It makes you feel strong, invincible," says IDean, "big bad wolf in a world of little pigs." "No, you're wrong, Dean," insists Sam. "It's more than that, isn't it," says IDean, "because your whole life, you've felt different, am I right?" "Stop it," orders Sam. "I hit a little close to home huh?" says IDean. Sam struggles to free himself from his cuffs. "Not different because you were some lonely little kid," continues IDean, "or because your weirdo family. . ." "Stop it!" orders Sam. Leaning down close to his face, Dean says, "Because you're a monster." "SHUT UP!" yells Sam--"Just shut the hell up!" "You're always a monster," says IDean viciously, "and you only feel right suckin' out more poison--and more EVIL!" Sam struggles against all his bonds, kicking, gritting his teeth. (LIVING ROOM) - "I would die for him in a second," Dean tells Bobby, "but I won't let him do this to himself, I can't--I guess I found my line. I won't let my brother turn into a monster." (PANIC ROOM) - Right in his face, Imaginary Dean spits, "MONSTER, SAM, YOU'RE A MONSTER!" "No, Dean, no!" begs Sam. "I tried so hard to pretend we were brothers, but you were one of the filthy things that we hunt--we're not even in the same species. You're nothing to me!" Sam's face contorts with misery and grief, tears running down his face. "Don't say that to me," pleads Sam, "don't you say that to me." Unable to bear it any longer, he turns his face away from the cruel taunts, but when he turns back, he's alone once more. The fan above him begins to turn, making odd patterns on his body and the floor. A high pitched sound fills the room. His left handcuff opens by itself, then his left ankle cuff. The same happens to his right hand and ankle cuffs, leaving his limbs completely free. Even more incredible, the panic room door opens! "Hello?" calls Sam, rising from the bed and standing. He pushes open the door. "Someone here?" Realizing he is alone, he races upstairs. Castiel appears, watching Sam leave. He freed Sam? WHY? The panic room door closes. With two fingers in mid air, Cas locks it. Sam quietly takes his jacket from the hallway closet, passes by the living room where Dean sleeps on the couch and Bobby with his head in the circle of his arms on the desk, and exits. (BY THE WATER, SOMEWHERE) - Cas stares down in the water. Anna appears. "What did you do?" she demands. "You shouldn't have come," he says. "Why would you let out Sam Winchester?" she asks. "Those were my orders," he says. "Orders?" she repeats. "Cas, you saw him--he's drinking demon blood!--it's so much worse than we thought--Dean was trying to stop him." "You really shouldn't have come," reiterates Cas. Anna finds herself surrounded by two "police" angels. As Cas watches, a bright light envelops the trio and they're gone. He looks up to heaven, then goes back to staring at the water. (Oh, Cas, I don't think Dean would consider this a very friendly thing to do--Dean's brother and his lover? BAD ANGEL!) read less

Taking advantage of the horrified look on Bobby's face, Sam grabs the gun and strikes him in the face with the butt, rendering the older man unconscious. Sam tosses the gun beside Bobby, hotwires the car he was stealing and heads down the road. (PANIC ROOM) - Dean and Bobby examine the place. "How the hell did he get out?" wonders Dean. "Maybe he had help," suggests Bobby, noting, "a room fulla busted Devil's Traps." "Demons?" says Dean. "Ruby!" "That'd be my guess," says Bobby. "How did she even touch the door?" asks Dean. "You think she's got the mojo?" asks Bobby. "I didn't think so," says Dean. Bobby points out it doesn't matter how he got out, but where he's going that they need to worry about. "I hope he's with Ruby," says Dean, "because killing her is next on my to-do list." "I thought you were on call for angel duty," says Bobby. "I am on call," says Dean, "in my car on my way to murder the bitch." "One thing," says Bobby, "Sam don't wanna be found, which means he's gonna be damn near impossible to find." "Honeymoon suite, really," she says, smiling, "I'm flattered." "Did you bust me out of that room?" Sam asks, breathing heavily. "How could I?" she asks. "The whole thing's engineered to bite me in the ass." "Then how did I get out of there?" he asks. "I don't know," replies Ruby, "I don't wanna know--you're out, that's all that matters. I'm glad you're here." "Yeah? Where the hell have YOU been?" he asks, pissed off. "I got here as quick as I could," she says. "I mean the past three weeks!" he says--"I've been calling you!" "I've been pretty deep in it trying to dig out Lilith, sometimes I can't sit around and check my voicemail," she says. She gets a good look at him and says, more gently, "I'm sorry you're hurting, really--I had no idea that Dean would do that to you." "You and me both," says Sam sadly. "You didn't book this joint just to impress me, did you?" she asks. "He's gonna come after me, says Sam, walking toward her, "and he knows my habits, my aliases, everything. He knows exactly which motel I'd pick." "Hence the room," realizes Ruby. "Whatever it takes to shake him," says Sam. "It won't be easy," she says, "he knows you better than anyone." "Not as well as he thinks," predicts Sam. "You know, it's sad," she says, reaching out to push back a lock of his hair, "that things have gotten this bad between you." He pushes her down violently onto the bed and hovers over her. He moves sensuously down her body until he finds what he's seeking--the knife she keeps in her boot--and slides it out. She smiles when he slices into her forearm and begins to suck out her blood. Ruby looks ecstatic, as if it's foreplay to lovemaking. read less

"Sam, relax, it's OK, it's good," she assures him, "it just means you're getting stronger, that's all; it means you're strong enough to kill Lilith. Just in time, too, because the final seals are breaking." "How many are left?" asks Sam. "Three, two," replies Ruby. "WHAT?" demands Sam. "Where are the angels?" "Screwing the pooch, wherever they are," she says, "the point is, it's looking more and more like we're getting down to the final seal, and I found out something big--seal 66--it can't be broken by just ANY demon--apparently, only Lucifer's first can do it. Demon Sunday school story--God prefers humans to angels, Lucifer gets jealous and then he gets creative and he twists the very first human soul into the very first demon, as a screw-you to God--that's what got him locked up in the first place." "That was Lilith?" asks Sam. "She's way older than she looks," says Ruby. "Wait. . .so if Lilith is the only one who can break the final seal," says Sam, "if I get to her in time. . ." "Lucifer never busts out of his cage, exactly," finishes Ruby, smiling. "Great," says Sam, "you figure out where she is?" "That bitch can hide," says Ruby, "but I finally have a lead on someone who might be able to help us. I closed in on a member of Lilith's entourage--you might call her a personal chef." "Chef, seriously," says Sam, puzzled, "what does she eat?" "You don't wanna know," Ruby assures him. (HOSPITAL CORRIDOR) - Two nurses, one blond, one with black hair, are walking and talking. "Did you hear about that terrible thing at St. Paul's?" the blond asks--"One of the neo-natal nurses walked right out the door with two babies." "You are kidding me," says the dark-haired nurse. "I swear to God," says the blond, "worked there 17 years, then one day out of the blue, she just does it." They walk around to stand in front of the nursery window, behind which lie many newborn babies. "That's just horrifying!" says the dark-haired nurse. "Now she's saying she doesn't remember what happened," says the blond disbelievingly, "that she was possessed." They both agree that's ridiculous. "Who could ever lay a finger on them?" coos the blond. "I know," agrees the dark-haired nurse, "they're just. . .delicious." Her eyes turn black.

In the meantime, if you're going to be strong enough to kill Lilith, you're going to need more than I can give you now." Sam sighs, unhappy. "Sam," she says, standing, "come on, it's OK." "I know I need more, I get it, I know it's OK," says Sam, walking closer to her, "it's just. . .I wish he trusted me, you know?" "Sorry," says Ruby. "I just hope, you know, when all this is over, I hope we can fix things." (Sam looks about five years old here, and so sad and hopeful!) Bobby reports to Dean that cops found the Escalade in a ditch outside Elk River. "How far away am I?" asks Dean from the Impala. "A couple of hours," answers Bobby, "there's a town not far from there--Cold Spring-- lighting up with demon signs." "Good place to look," says Dean. "Us finding Sam," says Bobby, "that's got to be about gettin' him back, not pushin' him away--I know you're mad, Dean, and you got a right to be, but, I'm just sayin'--be good to him anyway, you gotta get through to him." Dean hangs up. (MOTEL) - Sam leaves his room. From around a corner, Dean watches him go. Dean enters the room Sam exited and attacks Ruby with the demon-killing knife. He's just about to plunge it into her when Sam comes in a takes the knife away from him. Dean falls to the floor, but quickly rises. "Just take it easy," says Sam gently. "That musta been some party you two had goin'," says Dean, gasping for air, "considering how hard you tried to keep me from crashing it. Well, solid try, but here I am." "Dean, I'm glad you're here," says Sam, still speaking gently. "Look, let's just talk about this." Ruby rolls her eyes in disdain. "As soon as she's dead, we can talk all you want," promises Dean. "Ruby, get outta here," orders Sam. "She's not goin' anywhere!" insists Dean. Ruby races out. "She's poison, Sam!" cries Dean. "It's not what you think, Dean," says Sam, still speaking quietly. "LOOK WHAT SHE DID TO YOU!" says Dean. "But she up and vanishes for weeks at a time, leaves you crackin' out for another hit?" "She was looking for Lilith!" says Sam. "That's French for manipulatin' your ass ten ways from Sunday," says Dean. "You're wrong, Dean!" says Sam. "Sam, you're lyin' to yourself," says Dean, "I just WANT you to be OK--you would do the same for me, you know you would." Sam tosses the demon-killing knife on the bed and says, softly, pleading, "Just listen, for a second. We got a lead on a demon close to Lilith, come with us, Dean--we'll do this together." Sounding near tears, Dean says, "That sounds great--as long as it's you and me--the demon bitch is the deal-breaker--you kiss her good-bye, we can go right now." "I can't," says Sam, "Dean, I need her, to help me kill Lilith." Dean turns away, face filled in despair. He wipes a hand across his face. "I know you can't wrap your head around it," continues Sam, "but maybe, one day, you'll understand." Dean shakes his head, facing away from his brother. "I'm the only one who can do this, Dean." Dean faces Sam. "No, you're not the one who's gonna do this," he says. "That's right, I forgot," says Sam sarcastically, "the angels think it's you." "You don't think I can?" asks Dean. "No, you can't," says Sam, "you're not strong enough." "Who the hell are you. . ." begins Dean, furious. "I'm being practical here," says Sam, still gently, "I'm doing what needs to be done." "You're not going to do a single damn thing," says Dean. "Stop bossing me around, Dean!" begins Sam angrily, but he works to bring himself under control. "Look, my whole life, you take the wheel, you call the shots, and I trust you because you're my brother. Now, I'm asking you, for once, trust ME." Dean's face has been working through a huge mass of emotions through Sam's passionate plea. However, his response is "No. You don't know what you're doin', Sam." "Yes I do," insists Sam. "That's WORSE!" cries Dean, "because it's not something that you're doing, it's what you ARE! It means. . ." "What? asks Sam. Seeing the answer on his brother's face, he says, "No. . .say it." "It means you're a monster," admits Dean. Sam nods, purses his lips, looks away, then punches Dean in the mouth, sending him to the floor. Gasping for breath, Sam waits for his brother to stand up. Dean does and returns Sam's punch in the face. The brothers' battle continues, violent, ugly, with grunts and hard hits to faces and bodies. Sam sends Dean head-first into a mirror, which shatters. Dean ends up on the floor, too stunned to rise. Sam leaps on top of him and begins choking him. It's hard to tell whether Dean is able to wrest Sam's hands from his throat or Sam stops of his own volition. Sam stands over his brother and says, "You don't know me. You never did. And you never will." His voice harsh from being strangled, Dean retorts, "You walk out that door, don't you EVER come back!" Sam turns to look at him, his angry face assuring him that he won't. Sam leaves. Dean presses his hand to his heart and twists in pain and grief. read less
