(NARROW, DARK, SPOOKY, PLACE) - The brothers, flashlights moving everywhere, search for Cas. Sam asks what Cas said, what was so important. "If I knew, would I be here?" asks Dean. They arrive at a spot where lights are sparking and it looks like a bomb went off. There was a fight here, says Dean, and shines his light on a bloody red symbol written on one wall, which he says "Anna used to wish the angels back to the cornfield." "So Cas was fighting angels?" deduces Sam. Dean doesn't know, but they find "Cas" lying unconscious amidst the wreckage. "I'm not Castiel," the man says, "I'm me." "Who's me?" asks Sam. "Jimmy," the man answers. "Where the hell is Castiel?" demands Dean, concerned. "He's gone," says Jimmy. read less

Sam and Dean watch him gobble the sandwich and noisily suck up the soda. Sam asks what happened back there; it looked like an angel battle royale. All Jimmy remembers is a flash of light, then waking up like himself again. Dean asks if Cas ditched out of his meatsuit, but Jimmy is clueless. "Do you remember anything about being possessed?" asks Sam. "Angel inside you is kinda like being chained to a comet," describes Jimmy. "That doesn't sound like much fun," comments Dean. "Understatement," says Jimmy. "Cas said he wanted to tell us something," says Sam, "please tell us you remember that." "Sorry," says Jimmy, shaking his head.
What does he remember? "My name is Jimmy Novak. I'm from Pontiac, Illinois. I have a family." (FLASHBACK, one year ago) - Jimmy sits at a dining room table with his pretty daughter, Clair. His wife brings in a big roast and sets it on the table. Before Clair can grab a roll, Jimmy reminds her they must pray. They join hands. Jimmy says a fervent prayer of thanks to God, they all smile at each other, then commence to eat. Later, while watching a show about angels, Jimmy falls asleep in front of the TV. When the picture goes wonky, he tries changing channels, which doesn't help; he goes up to the TV set to turn it off, but that doesn't turn off the set, either. His head is filled with a horrific noise that makes him cover his ears, then sends him to the floor, convulsing.

(HOTEL, OUTSIDE ROOM 9) - While Jimmy paces inside, the brothers discuss what to do. Dean wants to buy him a bus ticket and return him to his family. Sam isn't so sure; he's the only lead they've got, and he isn't so sure Jimmy doesn't know anything, like he claims. "Do you want to go Guantanamo on the guy?" asks Dean. "Maybe he doesn't even know what he knows," suggests Sam, who wants to get him to Bobby's--maybe he needs hypnosis or a psychic; perhaps Cas will even drop back into him! Dean is unsure. "That was angel on angel violence," Sam reminds him, it was big, and they can't just let their only lead skip out. "Remember when our job was helping people, like getting them BACK to their families?" asks Dean. "You think I don't wanna help him?" asks Sam. "I'm just being realistic; hell, we're doing him a favor--if we wanna question the guy, you can damn well bet the demons do, too." It hits Dean that his brother is right--DAMN! (HOTEL ROOM) - "What the hell are you talkin' about, I can't go home?" demands Jimmy. When Dean explains about the demons, Jimmy explodes--he's done, with demons, angels, all of it, he just wants to go home! "I've been shot and stabbed and healed, and my body's been dragged all over the earth, and by some miracle, I'm out and I am DONE! I've given enough, OK!" "All I'm saying is that until we figure this out, the safest place is with us," says Sam. "How long?" asks Jimmy desperately. "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it," responds Sam. Jimmy tries to leave--he's going to see his wife and daughter! "No you're not," insists Sam, "you're just going to put those people in danger." "So now I'm a prisoner?" demands Jimmy. "Harsh way to put it," says Sam. (4:34 AM) - Jimmy, seemingly asleep, turns over. Sam gazes first at him, then at Dean asleep on the other bed. As he leaves the room, one of Jimmy's eyes pop open. Sam passes by the Impala. Jimmy, completely dressed, climbs from the bed and exits the hotel room, his raincoat clutched in one hand. He passes the Impala and runs off. Sam, engrossed in dumping the last few drops he has of Ruby's blood from a flask into the palm of his hand and licking it off, doesn't witness his escape. read less

Jimmy, riding on a bus, has a (FLASHBACK) - He's cutting red peppers when his radio goes staticky. He listens to the sound closely. When his wife, Amelia, comes home, she finds him with his arm buried in a pot of boiling water. She drops the bags of groceries she's carrying; something made of glass shatters. "What the hell are you doing?" she cries, racing toward him. "It's OK," he assures her, drawing his uninjured hand out, "nothing's wrong, he asks me to do it." "Who asked you to do it?" she asks, looking around for another person. "Castiel," answers Jimmy, "to prove my faith--look, I'm fine, it's a miracle." "Who's Castiel?" asks Amelia. Jimmy, leaning his head against the bus window, recalls all this. (IMPALA) - Dean is driving the car down the street. "Hey guys," Anna greets them from the back seat, causing Dean to swerve dangerously. "Smooth," she remarks. "Ever try callin' ahead?" asks Dean. "I like the element of surprise," she says. He turns to stare at her. "You look terrific," he says. "Yeah, not the most appropriate time, Dean," she responds, "did you let Jimmy get away?" "Talk to ginormo, here," says Dean, pointing at Sam. "Sam," says Anna, looking at him, "you seem. . .different." "Me?" he asks, floundering. "Haircut?" "That's not what I'm talking about," she says, staring at him until he faces front. "So," she says, turning back to Dean, "what did Jimmy tell you, do you remember anything?" "Why, what's goin' on?" asks Dean. "It's Cas," she says, "he got sent back home. . .more like dragged back." "To heaven?" asks Dean. "That's not a good thing?" "No!" says Anna. "That's a very bad thing--painfully, awfully bad." Dean and Sam exchange worried looks. "He must have seriously pissed someone off," adds Anna. "Cas said he had something to tell me, something important," says Dean. "Whatever it is, it's huge," says Anna, "you gotta find out for sure." "That's why we're goin' after Jimmy," says Sam. "That's why you shouldn't have let him go in the first place," says Anna, "he's probably dead already." (NOVAK HOME) - Jimmy walks up to his house, where the ground is picturesquely covered in snow. He sees Clair doing her homework at a table by the window and Amelia coming over to help her. (FLASHBACK) - Amelia stands holding out a bottle of pills, ordering him to take them. "I'm not sick," insists Jimmy, who is seated on the sofa. "I know that this is hard to understand, but he chose me. He's spoken to me now a dozen times. Hey, you believe in God, don't you? Why is it so hard for you to believe they're talking to me?" "You sell ad time for AM radio," she points out. "No, he said that I'm special, it's in my blood," says Jimmy. "God has chosen me for a higher purpose. It's God's will, not really my place to question it." He has her sit beside him and takes her hands in his. "This is a blessing. This is the most important thing that ever happened to me." "I thought we were the most important things to ever happen to you," she says, voice trembling, "you're scaring me." "Have faith," he says, "God will provide." "If you won't take your pills and you won't get help, then I'm going to take Clair to my mother's in the morning," she says, and walks upstairs. Jimmy puts on his trench coat and goes outside. "I want to help you," he says desperately. "I'm about to lose my family here if you don't tell me how. Please, Castiel, talk to me. . .what do you want from me?" Bright light fills the air over Jimmy's head. He gazes up, listening, his breath frosty in the icy air. He loosens his collar; time passes. "Yes, I understand. Promise my family will be OK and I'll do it," he vows. There are close-up shots of his beautiful eyes. "Then, yes," he replies. Jimmy is engulfed in white light and wind that transform him from human to angel. Clair comes outside. "Daddy," she says. He looks at her, tilting his head curiously. He turns away. In a monotone voice, he says, "I am not your father." He walks away, leaving Clair staring after him. Remembering all this, Jimmy steps up to the front door and rings the bell. Amelia opens the door, looks at him, and quickly looks inside, more concerned for her daughter than anything else. "We stopped looking for you," she whispers, stunned. "I'm so sorry," says Jimmy. "You were dead," she says, "we thought you were dead." "I'm OK," he says, teary-eyed. Clair, touching the banister as she comes downstairs, peers in at her mother and Jimmy. "Clair, room, now," orders Amelia. Their daughter obediently leaves. "Can I see her?" asks Jimmy. "I don't know yet," answers Amelia, tears running down her face, "it's almost a year." "I know," he says. They sit awkwardly. "Think your daughter would have wanted to know you're OK," she says. "I was in a psych clinic," he lies, "I just wanted to get myself straight before seeing you." "Oh," she says, "no telephones. . ." "You're right," he says, "I'm so sorry--but it's all over now, I'm OK." "What does that mean?" she asks. "I was confused, completely delusional," he says, "I thought God was calling me to something, I thought it was important. . .I was wrong, I was such an idiot, heaven, hell, none of that matters, the only thing that's important to me is you and Clair, and I can't undo what I've done, but I just want to go home." "I don't know if I can do that," she says, shaking her head, crying, "not yet." Jimmy bows his head. "Whatever you're comfortable with," he says, "maybe we could start with something smaller. . .like dinner?" read less

"Hi, baby," says Jimmy, hugging his daughter and kissing the top of her head. Amelia, apologizing because it's all she can rustle up, places turkey and roast beef sandwiches on the dining room table. When they sit down, Jimmy takes a sandwich onto his plate. "Daddy, aren't you going to say Grace?" asks Clair. Close to crying, Jimmy replies, "No, honey, I don't think I am." When she asks why he's crying, he says, "Because I'm happy." His daughter smiles at him uncertainly and Jimmy smiles tearily back. The doorbell rings; Amelia goes to answer. It's an old friend of Jimmy's, who asks Amelia, "Am I crazy, or did I just see your husband wander in here a little while ago?" "Yeah, but Roger, now's not a good time," she tries to explain. Jimmy comes over and hugs his friend, who says, "Son-of-a-bitch, what happened to you?" "Long story," says Jimmy, "but it's over. "I'm good." Roger asks to speak to Jimmy, so Amelia goes to get him a beer. "You scared the hell out of a lot of people," says Roger as they head into the living room. Jimmy knows that. "So really, what happened?" asks Roger. "Honestly," says Jimmy, "worst year of my life and you wouldn't believe a word of it, but it's all OK now, I swear." "Actually, no it's not," says Roger, "I'm going to gut your daughter while you watch." His eyes go black. When Amelia returns with the beers, Jimmy punches Roger in the mouth and begins beating the hell out of him, all the while yelling at a horrified, screaming Amelia to take Clair and RUN! read less

"Roger is a demon, damn it!" shouts Jimmy, which makes Amelia realize her husband lied--he's STILL crazy, and she has to get her daughter and herself away from him! When they race from the safety of the pantry, Roger, face covered with blood from Jimmy's beating, is standing there, Clair his prisoner. "Hi, pal!" he says, "I told you I'd get the bitch." "Daddy!" pleads Clair. "Just let her go," begs Jimmy. "Now me, I would," says Roger, "but the Mrs. has other ideas." A short haired woman, Roger's wife, takes Jimmy down and begins beating him up. When Amelia sees her eyes turn black, she realizes her husband was telling the truth and dives on the other woman's back, trying to force her off Jimmy. Dean enters the fray and slits Roger's throat with the demon-killing knife. Jimmy, Amelia and Clair flee the house. Sam futilely attempts to pull the demon from Roger's wife, who taunts, "Can't get it up, can you, Sam?" "No, but I can," says Dean, coming at her with the knife. The demon exits the woman's body in a black plume of smoke. Dean urges Sam out of the house, the five of them climb into the Impala and race away. (LATER) - Amelia and Clair, heads together, sleep in the back seat of the Impala. "You were right," Jimmy tells Dean, his left cheek sporting a cut. "Sorry we were," says Dean. "I don't know anything," insists Jimmy. "I don't think they're inclined to believe you," says Dean. "Even if they did," says Sam, "you're a vessel; they're still gonna wanna know what makes you tick." "Which means vivisection, if they're feeling generous," says Dean. Sam reiterates to Jimmy that he's putting his family in danger, "You have to come with us." Jimmy gazes at his wife and child asleep in the car. "How long?--and don't give me that cross that bridge when we get to it crap." he says. "Don't you get it?" asks Sam incredulously. "Forever. Demons will never stop--you can NEVER be with your family--so you either get as far away from them as possible or you put a bullet in your head--and that's how you keep your family safe! But there's no getting out and there's no going home." During Sam's speech, Dean looks resigned and sad. He says, "Don't sugar-coat it, Sammy." "I'm telling him the truth, Dean," says Sam harshly, "someone has to." Jimmy, forehead wrinkled with sorrow, looks at them. In the Impala, Clair still sleeps, covered with her father's trench coat. Amelia watches over her. Jimmy opens the car door and hunkers down beside his wife, who says, "I pretty much owe you the biggest apology ever." "No you don't," he says. "Yes, I do," she counters with a sad chuckle. "I'm so sorry, Jimmy--and I'll never, ever forgive myself for letting you walk out that door." She's crying. "You did what any rational person would have done," he points out, "and hell, I thought I was crazy half the time." She laughs a bit. "So," she says, "demons, hm?" "Yeah," he says, and they laugh together. "Can we even go home?" she asks. "What are we going to do?" He assures her Sam and Dean will get her a car and she's taking Clair to Aunt Sally's as fast as she can--he's not going with them. When she says she refuses to go anywhere without him, he says, "Every moment I'm with you, you and Clair are in danger." "I don't care!" she says. "We are NOT splitting up again." "We don't have a choice," insists Jimmy. When asked how long, he replies, "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it." She purses her lips, looks at her daughter and says, "We're a family." "They will kill you, Amelia, and they will kill Clair," he reminds her, "you just have to get as far away from me as you can." They hug, Amelia crying. Dean sees it and averts his eyes. Sam hot-wires the vehicle he stole for them. "There's your car," he says. Outside the car, Jimmy tells Clair to take care of her mother. She nods. He presses his forehead to hers. He exchanges a last look with his wife and climbs into the Impala's back seat behind Sam and Dean. They drive away. "Why is he leaving again?" Clair asks her black-eyed mother, who smacks her across the face, hard. "'Cause it's just not my day, is it, you bitch?" asks the demon. (IMPALA) - Jimmy has fallen asleep in the back seat. Dean asks Sam what happened back there; why did he nearly faint trying to gank a demon? Sam denies fainting: "I got a little dizzy." "You used to be strong enough to kill Alistair," Dean reminds him, "now you can't even kill stunt demon number three? What's goin' on with your mojo; it's yoyoin' all over the place? I'm not tryin' to pick a fight here, you're just scarin' me, man." "I'm scarin' myself," confesses Sam, whose phone rings at that moment. It's for Jimmy--Amelia. Sam passes the phone to him. "Yeah, I know," grins Dean, "that's why I have a plan." Jimmy stands and says to the sky, "CASTIEL, YOU SON OF A BITCH! YOU PROMISED ME MY FAMILY WOULD BE OK, YOU PROMISED YOU WOULD TAKE CARE OF THEM! I GAVE YOU EVERYTHING YOU ASKED ME TO GIVE, I GAVE YOU MORE! THIS IS THE THANKS I GET, THIS IS WHAT YOU DO? THIS IS YOUR HEAVEN? HELP ME, PLEASE! YOU PROMISED, CAS! HELP ME!" He waits, looks around, and mutters "Typical," angrily before walking off and entering the warehouse. Amelia stands beside Clair, who is sitting tied to a chair. "Hi, honey, you're home," she greets him. "I'm begging you here," says Jimmy, "do whatever you want with me, but my wife and daughter, they're not a part of this." "They're a big part of this," she says, "and you should have come alone." "I am alone," he insists. "You're such a liar," she accuses, "like I didn't think you'd bring Heckle and Jekyll." Demons bring in Sam and Dean. "Nice plannin', Dean," mocks Sam, who has two demons holding him. "Yeah, well, nobody bats a thousand," says Dean, who is being held captive by one demon. "Got the knife?" asks Demon Amelia. The female demon holding Sam proudly holds it up. "You know what's funny?" asks Demon Amelia. "You wearin' a soccer mom?" jests Dean. "I was actually bummed to get this detail," she says, "picking up an empty vessel, sorta like a milk run. Now look who landed in my lap." "Ya got us," says Sam, "let these people go." "Oh, Sam, it's easy to act chivalrous when your powers aren't working," she chortles. "Now the punchline--everybody dies!" She points the gun at the Winchesters, but turns around and instead fires into Jimmy's abdomen. He grips at the bleeding wound and falls to his knees. "Waste Little Orphan Annie," she orders one of the male demons, who walks to the very back of the warehouse where Clair is tied up. Sam and Dean struggle against their captors, agitated; Jimmy tries to rise despite his serious injury to help his daughter. Clair appears to be asleep when the demon raises a two by four over her head, but she awakens quickly and presses her hand to his forehead. Light gleams from his eyes, nose and throat as he falls to the floor and dies. The distraction is enough to set Sam and Dean on their demon captors, and much punching ensues. Clair goes over to Jimmy, who takes one look at her and says, "Castiel!" Clair-Castiel kills the demon seriously whaling on Dean. Sam wrests the demon-killing knife away from the female demon and makes a slit on the side of her throat with it, just enough to whet his appetite. He begins sucking blood from her wound, enough to resurrect his flagging powers, and faces Dean and Clair-Castiel, his mouth and chin covered with demon blood. Sam turns back to the demon and plunges the knife into her chest, killing her. When Sam reaches out his hand, Dean flinches away in fear and revulsion. Demon Amelia runs in, Dean steps out of the way, and Sam easily extracts the demon from her, killing the demon but leaving host Amelia intact and alive. Clair-Castiel goes over to the bleeding Jimmy and kneels beside him, caressing his hair. "Of course we keep our promises," she says, "of course you have our gratitude. You served us well. Your work is done. It's time to go home now. Your REAL home. You will rest forever in the fields of the Lord. Rest now, Jimmy." He shakes his head, whimpering. "Clair!" he cries, blood staining his teeth. "She's with me now," says Clair-Castiel, "she chose it, it's in her blood, as it was in yours." "Please, Castiel," begs Jimmy, "take me. Please." Sam, Dean and Amelia come over and witness what is taking place. "I want to make sure you understand," says the angel, "you won't die or age. If this last year was painful for you, picture a hundred, a thousand more like it." Groaning in pain, blood gurgling in his throat, Jimmy says, "It doesn't matter, you take me! TAKE ME!" "As you wish," she says. She cups Jimmy's face in her hands. A brilliant light fills the room as Castiel's essence is transferred from Clair to Jimmy. Clair gasps from exertion, barely able to move. Castiel, once more in Jimmy's body, rises. Amelia hurries to her daughter's side. Castiel stands between Sam and Dean, watching Amelia hug her daughter, tears falling down her face. "Cas, hold on," says Dean, "what were you going to tell me?" "I learned my lesson while I was away, Dean," says Cas in a very cold monotone, "I serve Heaven, I don't serve man--and I certainly don't serve YOU." He walks away, leaving the Winchester brothers staring after him, shaken. read less
