Senor Chang confronts the class about the evaluations they wrote for him. Though they were supposed to be anonymous, Abed signed his. Another one was so insulting that Senor Chang took the time to analyze the handwriting and figured out who wrote it. It was Annie.

Jeff and Shirley leaves class together and awkwardly heads in opposite directions to their next class, which they share. On his way, Jeff tells Britta that he feels like he should walk with Shirley, but he has nothing to discuss with her. They also meet Vaughn, Britta's sort-of boyfriend, while he plays shirtless hacky-sack in the courtyard with his hippie friends. Britta tells Jeff that she's glad they're just friends now, even though they kissed in the last episode.

Annie persuades Professor Duncan to let her join his exclusive lab, even though she's a first-year student. Duncan agrees, as long as she brings two (human) subjects for their new study and lends him five dollars.

Jeff walks by Vaughn and Britta talking and laughing. Pierce shows off his new gadget, "earnoculars" which allow him to hear long-distance noises. Annie asks the group if they're interested in being in her psychology experiment. Troy is interested, though Abed takes some convincing since he doesn't consider himself to be Annie's close friend.

Jeff tries to divert Britta's attention away from Vaughn and onto him, but it doesn't work. Pierce hears their conversation with his earnoculars and shares it with the rest of the group.

Professor Duncan explains the experiment, which involves the subjects being told to wait in a room for the experiment to begin when in fact, the waiting is the experiment. The students will watch them from a monitor. It turns out that the Duncan Principle is that the more control lost by the ego, the more gained by the id, resulting in a breaking point or "tantrum". Annie is chosen to tell the subjects that they will have to wait five more minutes in the room.

For her part of the experiment, Annie tells the subjects to wait five minutes. One of the subjects, who happens to be Senor Chang, immediately reaches his "breaking point", throws a chair, and leaves the room. Back in the classroom, Professor Duncan and the others watch.

Professor Duncan and his student research assistants play the tape of their experiment in fast-forward time, laughing at each subject's breaking point. Eventually the only ones left in the waiting room are Troy and Abed. Troy reaches his breaking point, screaming at Annie that he wasted his whole day and it was all for nothing. He then drags himself out of the room, while Abed stays.

Shirley and Jeff bond while sitting on a bench on the courtyard and making fun of Vaughn. Suddenly they catch Britta and Vaughn making out in the grass.

Britta apologizes to Jeff for her "tacky" behavior in the courtyard, and that she never told him about Vaughn because she wasn't sure how. Jeff says that Vaughn seems cool and reminds Britta and she and him are just friends.

While Shirley and Jeff walk together, they make fun of Senor Chang, but when she brings up Vaughn, Jeff is hesitant. He explains to Shirley that he wants to be a good friend to Britta. Shirley thinks that's no reason for her to stop mocking Vaughn and though Jeff clearly enjoys it, he runs from her.

Twenty-six hours after the experiment started, Abed is still in the waiting room with no signs of breaking. In the classroom, everyone is exhausted and one student leaves. Professor Duncan throws a tantrum, completely reversing his own theory. Annie screams at Abed to go home. Professor Duncan blames her for making them wait for so long, and kicks her out of the research lab.

While Jeff tries to hang out with Britta and Vaughn, Shirley comes over to them and gets Vaughn to take his shirt off so she can make fun of his tiny nipples behind his back to Jeff. Jeff can barely resist.

Britta and Jeff try to study Spanish but Britta is distracted. She tells him that Vaughn is trying to get too serious too quickly with her and shows him a poem he wrote for her. Jeff secretly takes a picture of it with his phone and shows it to Shirley. They have a great time mocking it, though they don't know that Pierce is listening to them with his earnoculars.
