It's the last day to add or drop classes, and Jeff decides to take Beginner Pottery so that he can get an easy art credit. Pierce, on the other hand, is psyched about taking a sailing class in the GCC parking lot. Abed and Annie join Jeff; Britta, Shirley, and Troy join Pierce.

Jeff strolls into his first day of pottery class with swagger, flirting and cracking jokes, until he sees another student named Rich. Rich is not only getting more attention from the ladies, he's a very talented sculptor. Abed notices Jeff's rising jealousy. Meanwhile, Professor Holly warns them never, ever to reenact the pottery scene from the movie Ghost.

As the group walks into Spanish class, Pierce brags about being the captain of a Jet-ski during an electrical storm, and therefore has more experience as a boat captain than Shirley, who had never even been on a boat before taking sailing class. Abed points out Jeff's jealousy of Rich. Jeff says if he put any effort into pottery class, he'd be better at it than him, but he just chooses not to. While Jeff tries to sculpt a pot that's better than Rich's, he flashes back to when his mother told him he was the most special little boy in the world. He then looks down at his pottery wheel and sees a very poorly made ashtray-looking thing.

With the help of Admiral Slaughter, Captain Shirley and her crew navigate their boat through the parking lot, going through all the motions of sailing except they're not moving and they have to pretend that the pavement is the ocean. Shirley gives an improper command and Pierce gets knocked over by part of the boat. He hangs on tightly to avoid falling into the "ocean". They all get a D for the day and everyone's mad at Shirley.

Jeff pretends that he broke his finger to get out of pottery class, but Rich examines it and says it's neither sprained nor broken. Rich knows because he's a doctor who uses pottery to unwind. Jeff insists to Abed that Rich is only using the class to impress people and that when he slips up, Jeff will be there. Meanwhile, everyone's in love with Rich, including Professor Holly.

Goldblumming

Jeff follows Rich to his car and interrogates him about his history with pottery. He learns that Rich is from Santa Fe, and with this new kernel of information, Jeff stays up all night researching Santa Fe at the GCC library. When the group gathers to study the next day, they find that Jeff has become paranoid and obsessed with taking Rich down.

A Perfect Storm

Admiral Slaughter tests his class by having them navigate through a hypothetical storm. Pierce is knocked overboard and Troy and Britta throw him a life saver, but Shirley tells them that they don't have time to save him. Troy is especially distraught as Pierce cries in dramatic agony, although he stops when Senor Chang almost runs him over when he parks his moped.

Unchained Melody

At the pottery studio, Jeff watches Rich's every move until he does a more advanced move on his pottery wheel. Jeff stands up and proclaims Rich and imposter, since he's in a beginner pottery class but did an advanced move on the wheel. Rich doesn't know what he's talking about so Jeff gets behind him and tries to make him do it again. Since it resembles the scene from Ghost, Professor Holly kicks him out of the class and Jeff sings "Unchained Melody" to further annoy him.

Jeff explains how Rich is intimidating him because he always thought he was special and different and he can't stand it when he wants to the best at something that he can't. Pierce tells him how his crew left him to drown so that they could get a better grade, but it isn't stopping him from finding a way to get back into sailing class. Pierce paddles his way across the parking lot to the sailboat when he runs over a sprinkler and causes a leak in his boat. Shirley decides to lead the crew into the storm to save him, even if it means getting a bad grade. She defends her actions to Admiral Slaughter because she would rather the boat go down with honor. Pierce is rescued, the class gets an A, and Shirley is promoted to Admiral status, even though that doesn't really mean anything.
